In our last post, we shared how to use spent coffee grounds to make a nice, hot coffee bath.
This time, we shall show you how to further utilize spent coffee grounds to make a good shampoo for your pets.
The oil, caffeine, and natural minerals in the coffee moisturize and improve the skin’s blood flow, leaving a natural glow on the skin and hair.
Coffee is also very well known as a natural deodorant and an insect repellent.
To make DIY pet coffee shampoo is very simple and easy.
You will need:
- Used Coffee spent
- A medium or large disposable tea bag
- A plastic tie
- Deycel Glucoside Surfactant or baby shampoo
- Water
- A squirt bottle (with a small spout)
- Essential oil like tea tree (optional)
Decyl glucoside is a plant-derived, biodegradable, and mild surfactant and cleaner. It is often used in baby shampoo and in products for people with sensitive skin. If you choose not to use this, you can replace it with any baby shampoo.
Step 1: Making concentrated coffee liquid.
- Place the coffee grounds in a tea bag.
- Place it in a pot of water. The coffee grounds to water ratio is 3:1. You may increase the ratio to 5:1 to make a more concentrated liquid mix. Bring it to a boil. Remove the pot from the heat.
- Leave the bag of coffee grounds in the pot. Allow the mixture to cool completely before removing the bag of coffee grounds.
- Transfer the liquid mixture into the squirt bottle.
Step 2: Making pet shampoo
- Add Deycel Glucoside Surfactant, which is 8–10% of the liquid mix. If you use baby shampoo, it may be 20-30%, depending on the brand.
- Add a couple of drops of essential oils like tea tree, lavender, or orange, as you prefer.
- Stir the mixture well.
This shampoo will be runny because it does not have a thickening agent, which is usually added to all liquid products. The objective of a thickening agent is to improve viscosity so that it is pleasing to the eye and simple to apply. However, the mixture works just fine without it.
Stay tuned. We will have more creative ideas for using spent coffee.
